This dedication will be played on CBC2 FM 90.9 on July 28 between 10:00 a.m. -12:00 noon. The song is a toccata played by Chris Herrick, composed by Maurice durufle. This weekend in Chemistry History July 21 • Georg Brandt, born 1694, one the first chemists to abandon alchemy as a science; in 1735, discovered cobalt (Co, 27). • Henri V. Regnault, born 1810, conducted research in thermometry, specific heats, expansion of gases; found carbon tetrachloride. • Navy asks Thomas Edison to organize the keenest, most inventive minds to find a defense against submarines in 1915. • Rudolph A. Marcus, born 1923, Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1992). July 22 • Selman A. Waksman, born 1888, isolated streptomycin (1943); Nobel Prize in Medicine (1952). July 23 • Emma P. Carr, born 1880, conducted research on ultraviolet spectra of hydrocarbons; first recipient of American Chemical Society's Francis P. Garvan Medal (1937). • Vladimir Prelog, born 1906, researched stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions; Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1975).
